HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

HONORING CULTURAL PRACTITIONER TROY ALLEN KIMEONA KANE FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE REVITALIZATION AND PERPETUATION OF NATIVE HAWAIIAN UHAU HUMU PŌHAKU (HAWAIIAN DRY-SET MASONRY) KNOWLEDGE.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Native Hawaiian uhau humu pōhaku practitioner TROY ALLEN KIMEONA KANE has taught students of all ages from across the State of Hawaii as well as from Canada, Aotearoa, and Palau in uhau humu pōhaku while perpetuating ōlelo Hawaii and cultural protocol, such as oli and mālama āina classes; and

 

     WHEREAS, TROY ALLEN KIMEONA KANE started his own study, as part of the Waimānalo Limu Hui established in 2007, when he took on the challenge of restoring the cultural treasure Pāhonu, the only known turtle pond in the State, which was built some 800 years ago for Waimānalo Alii Kuikui to house his sea turtles; and

 

     WHEREAS, restoration of Pāhonu so that it can once again be productive with native fish and native limu required TROY ALLEN KIMEONA KANE to study and practice uhau humu pōhaku; and

 

     WHEREAS, since that time, TROY ALLEN KIMEONA KANE has shared his knowledge with students of uhau humu pōhaku and volunteers through shared work on restoration of over a dozen wahi pana, or places of cultural significance, across the island of Oahu, to wahi pana on other islands, such as Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park on Hawaii Island and even across the Pacific to Palau; and

 

     WHEREAS, since April 2019, TROY ALLEN KIMEONA KANE has worked as the Director of Community Outreach for 808 Cleanups, an environmental nonprofit organization committed to restoring Hawaii's natural beauty through cleanups of litter and vandalism and activities that protect indigenous ecosystems and promote sustainability across the State of Hawaii; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2023, that this body hereby honors cultural practitioner TROY ALLEN KIMEONA KANE for his contributions to the revitalization and perpetuation of Native Hawaiian uhau humu pōhaku (Hawaiian dry-set masonry) knowledge, expresses its gratitude to him for his expert work and outstanding service across the State of Hawaii, and extends to him its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success.
