SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

recognizing May 2011 as American Psychiatric Association Month in Hawaii.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the American Psychiatric Association, founded in 1844, is the world's largest psychiatric organization, representing more than 38,000 psychiatric physicians from the United States and around the world and serving as the voice and conscience of modern psychiatry; and

 

     WHEREAS, American Psychiatric Association member physicians work together to ensure humane care and effective treatment for all persons with mental disorders, including intellectual disability and substance-related disorders; and

 

     WHEREAS, the mission of the American Psychiatric Association is to:

 

     (1)  Promote the highest quality care for individuals with mental disorders (including mental retardation and substance-related disorders) and their families;

 

     (2)  Promote psychiatric education and research;

 

     (3)  Advance and represent the profession of psychiatry; and

 

     (4)  Serve the professional needs of its membership;

 

and

 

     WHEREAS, the following represent core values that are encouraged and supported by the American Psychiatric Association:
     (1)  Best standards of clinical practice;

 

     (2)  Highest ethical standards of professional conduct;

 

     (3)  Prevention, access, care, and sensitivity for patients and compassion for their families;

 

     (4)  Patient-focused treatment decisions;

 

     (5)  Scientifically established principles of treatment;

 

     (6)  Advocacy for patients; and

 

     (7)  Leadership, lifelong professional learning, collegial support, respect for diverse views and pluralism within the field and the Association;

 

and

 

     WHEREAS, the American Psychiatric Association has committed itself to providing an array of important services for its members and the community at large, including research activities, continuing education for members, and advocacy on a variety of issues relevant to psychiatry; and

 

     WHEREAS, the American Psychiatric Association will be holding its Annual Meeting in Honolulu from May 14 – 18, 2011; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Legislature recognizes May of 2011 as American Psychiatric Association Month in Hawaii to acknowledge and commend the Association for its steadfast commitment to improving the delivery of psychiatric services to those in need.
