SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

ENCOURAGING EACH COUNTY TO ENACT AN ORDINANCE TO provide real property tax exemptionS for VETERANS.

 

 


     WHEREAS, some mainland jurisdictions provide for a partial real property tax exemption for veterans; and

 

     WHEREAS, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, provides a veterans exemption allowing a $4,000 reduction off the assessed value of real property; and

 

     WHEREAS, the State of New York allows counties to provide three forms of tax exemptions on real property owned by veterans:  an eligible funds veterans' real property tax exemption, alternative veterans' exemption, and Cold War veterans' exemption; and

 

     WHEREAS, according to the Office of Veterans Services of the State Department of Defense, there are an estimated 118,000 to 120,000 veterans living in Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, many veterans living in Hawaii also own property and are living on a fixed income; and

 

     WHEREAS, as a tribute to veterans in Hawaii the counties should consider providing them a real property tax exemption; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2010, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Legislature encourages each county to enact an ordinance to provide real property tax exemptions for veterans, as follows:

 

(1)  A one hundred per cent real property tax exemption for totally disabled veterans; and

 

(2   A fifty per cent real property tax exemption for National Defense Service Medal recipients or wartime veterans;

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the mayor of each county and every member of each county council in Hawaii.
