SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the city and county of honolulu to name a street after martin luther king, jr.

 

 


     WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr., was an important leader and activist for the advancement of civil rights in the United States; and

 

     WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr., championed nonviolent civil disobedience as a means to combat racial inequality in the United States, particularly in the southern United States; and

 

     WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr., was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of thirty-five and numerous other awards throughout his lifetime and, after his death, became a symbolic leader for African-Americans and others around the world; and

 

     WHEREAS, as of 2014, there were more than nine hundred streets in forty-two states and Puerto Rico named after Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii is one of the states that does not have a street named after Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

 

     WHEREAS, it is most befitting that a state that celebrates diversity and acceptance of various ethnicities have a street in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, the House of Representatives concurring, that the City and County of Honolulu is urged to name a street after Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu and each of the members of the Council of the City and County of Honolulu.
