SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

URGING the REPAIR OF CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT PLACES ON THE GROUNDS OF IOLANI PALACE.

 

 


     WHEREAS, Iolani Palace and its surrounding environs, also known as the State of Hawaii Museum of Monarchy History, have long been considered of special historical and spiritual significance to the State, numerous Hawaiian organizations, and individuals; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaiians of many different organizations, as well as individuals, have frequently gathered on the grounds throughout the years; and

 

     WHEREAS, some organizations and individuals have regularly attended to the cleaning of the burial mound called Pohukaina, as well as the stones in front of and on either side of the Kanaina Building, or Old Archives; and

 

     WHEREAS, there is growing concern about the lack of repair and maintenance of these sacred items and places; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Department of Land and Natural Resources has often expressed concern about the proper use and care of the areas and artifacts within the Iolani Palace grounds; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Land and Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Friends of Iolani Palace, is urged to fund repairs of the wrought iron fence and brick wall surrounding Pohukaina, as well as the placement of signage fronting the Paepaekapu Stone in front of the Kanaina Building, or Old Archives; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, Friends of Iolani Palace, and the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs.
