SENATE RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the department of BUsiness, economic development, and tourism to establish an olympic committee to investigate the FEASIBILITY of HOSTING the olympic games in hawaii.

 

 


     WHEREAS, every two years, cities around the world apply with the International Olympic Committee to host the Olympic Games; and

 

     WHEREAS, each applicant city receives a questionnaire from the International Olympic Committee and must respond to a variety of questions relating to the city's motivation for hosting the Olympics, what venues the city intends to use or build for each event, the kinds of accommodations that will be available, and the types of transportation that will be provided for athletes and spectators; and

 

     WHEREAS, a host city typically is selected seven years before the particular games for which it applied to host in order to provide ample time for the chosen city to plan and prepare for the Olympics; and

 

     WHEREAS, host cities may experience many benefits of hosting the Olympic Games, including greater international exposure, an increase in construction jobs, increase in tourism, and improved infrastructure; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, that the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism is urged to establish an Olympic Committee to investigate the feasibility of hosting the Olympic Games in the State; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Olympic Committee is requested to identify a potential city in the State to host the Olympic Games and develop a proposal to submit to the International Olympic Committee in application to host the 2024 Olympic Games; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism report its findings and recommendations to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2014; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor; Director of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism; Chair of the Hawaii Tourism Authority; Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu; Mayor of the County of Hawaii; Mayor of the County of Kauai; and Mayor of the County of Maui.
