SENATE RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING STRONG SUPPORT FOR THE FACULTY AND STUDENTS OF THE CLASSICS DIVISION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES OF EUROPE AND THE AMERICAS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA.

WHEREAS, Classics is the study of Greek and Latin languages and the foundation for a truly multicultural curriculum at the University of Hawaii at Manoa; and

WHEREAS, approximately one hundred and fifty students fulfill their language requirement through the study of Greek and Latin languages; and

WHEREAS, there have been four faculty and staff in the Classics Division at the University of Hawaii at Manoa for the past forty-five years; and

WHEREAS, the recent death of one of the Classics faculty members has reduced the number of faculty available to plan, teach, and oversee requisite introductory courses as well as the elective courses attended by students that are similarly interested in supporting the discipline of Classics; and

WHEREAS, fifty students each semester are unable to attend a Classics course because of the lack of available places; and

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, that this body strongly supports the faculty and students of the Classics Division of the Department of Languages and Literatures of Europe and the Americas at the University of Hawaii at Manoa; and
