  1  1    Section 1.  NEW SECTION.  135.192  Designation of stroke
  1  2 centers and acute stroke=ready hospitals.
  1  3    1.  The department shall recognize as an acute stroke=ready
  1  4 hospital, an accredited acute care hospital that applies for
  1  5 and receives certification as an acute stroke=ready hospital
  1  6 from the joint commission on the accreditation of health care
  1  7 organizations or another certifying entity that is a nationally
  1  8 recognized guidelines=based organization that provides acute
  1  9 stroke=ready hospital certification for stroke care, if the
  1 10 accredited acute care hospital is in good standing with and
  1 11 maintains certification through such a national certifying
  1 12 organization.
  1 13    2.  The department shall recognize as a primary stroke
  1 14 center, an accredited acute care hospital that applies for
  1 15 and receives certification as a primary stroke center from
  1 16 the joint commission on the accreditation of health care
  1 17 organizations or another certifying entity that is a nationally
  1 18 recognized guidelines=based organization that provides primary
  1 19 stroke center hospital certification for stroke care, if the
  1 20 accredited acute care hospital is in good standing with and
  1 21 maintains certification through such a national certifying
  1 22 organization.
  1 23    3.  The department shall recognize as a comprehensive stroke
  1 24 center, an accredited acute care hospital that applies for
  1 25 and receives certification as a comprehensive stroke center
  1 26 from the joint commission on the accreditation of health
  1 27 care organizations or another certifying entity that is a
  1 28 nationally recognized guidelines=based organization that
  1 29 provides comprehensive stroke center hospital certification
  1 30 for stroke care, if the accredited acute care hospital is in
  1 31 good standing with and maintains certification through such a
  1 32 national certifying organization.
  1 33    4.  The department shall appropriately recognize
  1 34 comprehensive and primary stroke centers that attain a level
  1 35 of stroke care distinction from the joint commission on
  2  1 accreditation of health care organizations or other certifying
  2  2 entity that is a nationally recognized guidelines=based
  2  3 organization, including but not limited to those attaining
  2  4 a level of stroke care distinction for offering mechanical
  2  5 endovascular therapies.
  2  6                           EXPLANATION
  2  7 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
  2  8 the explanation's substance by the members of the general assembly.
  2  9    This bill relates to stroke=related care.
  2 10    The bill requires recognition by the department of public
  2 11 health (DPH) of acute stroke=ready hospitals, primary
  2 12 stroke centers and comprehensive stroke centers, based upon
  2 13 accreditation by a nationally recognized entity for the
  2 14 applicable level of certification, if the accredited acute care
  2 15 hospital is in good standing with and maintains certification
  2 16 through such a national certifying entity.
  2 17    The bill also requires DPH to appropriately recognize
  2 18 comprehensive and primary stroke centers that attain a level
  2 19 of stroke care distinction from specified national accrediting
  2 20 entities, including but not limited to those attaining a level
  2 21 of stroke care distinction for offering mechanical endovascular
  2 22 therapies.
