1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, 20 million Americans suffer from chronic kidney
3 | disease and an additional 20 million are at risk for kidney
4 | disease; 600,000 people in Illinois alone suffer from chronic
5 | kidney disease and over 15,000 are on dialysis due to kidney
6 | failure; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives recognizes
8 | that more can be done to prevent and lessen the effects of
9 | Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and improve the lives of millions
10 | of Americans; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Early detection is critical to helping those
12 | affected by kidney disease; the Illinois House of
13 | Representatives recognizes that early detection and treatment
14 | in its early stages can delay the onset of end stage kidney
15 | failure, which in turn reduces the number of patients that
16 | require dialysis and reduces the long-term effects of the
17 | disease, including its impact on diabetes and cardiovascular
18 | disease; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, African-Americans and Hispanics currently suffer
20 | from chronic kidney disease at a rate that is four times higher
21 | than the overall rate of Americans diagnosed with CKD; and
|
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | WHEREAS, Targeting specific populations can help maximize
2 | the efficiency of catching the disease in its early stages,
3 | saving not only money but greatly improving the quality of life
4 | of those affected by the disease; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, We have affirmed our support for early detection
6 | and education programs offered through the National Kidney
7 | Foundation of Illinois and World Kidney Day; therefore, be it
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
10 | designate March 12, 2009 as "World Kidney Day" in the State of
11 | Illinois; and be it further
| ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, That we support public policy initiatives in this
13 | area and acknowledge the need for education and awareness to
14 | support applicable medical treatment specific to the
15 | populations at greatest risk in eliminating this health
16 | disparity.
