Bill Title: Amends the School Code. Requires the State Board of Education to cooperate with the Chicago school district to locate students that stopped attending school since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and to address issues of truancy and chronic absenteeism. Requires a regional superintendent of schools to increase the regional office of education's capacity to work with school districts to locate students that stopped attending school since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and to address issues of truancy and chronic absenteeism. Effective immediately.

1 AN ACT concerning education.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Sections
52-3.196 and 3-14.32 as follows:
6 (105 ILCS 5/2-3.196 new)
7 Sec. 2-3.196. Truancy; COVID-19. The State Board of
8Education shall cooperate with a school district organized
9under Article 34 to locate students that stopped attending
10school since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and to
11address issues of truancy and chronic absenteeism.

13 Sec. 3-14.32. Truancy; COVID-19. To increase the regional
14office of education's capacity to work with school districts
15to locate students that stopped attending school since the
16beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and to address issues of

18 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
19becoming law.
