SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Edward James "Ed" Collins Jr., who passed
4away on February 20, 2019; and
5 WHEREAS, Ed Collins was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts to
6Mary Elizabeth Rogers and Edward James Collins Sr. on March 17,
71933; he graduated from Brighton High School in Boston in 1952
8and served for three years in the U.S. Army Security Agency,
9where he was stationed in South Korea for over a year and
10involved in top secret classified work; and
11 WHEREAS, Ed Collins returned from military service and
12enrolled at Boston University; he transferred to the University
13of California, Berkeley and decided to become a journalist; he
14graduated in 1955 and took a position with the Brawley Daily
15News, a small community newspaper in Southern California; and
16 WHEREAS, Ed Collins accepted a position as Executive
17Director of the Oakland Junior Chamber of Commerce and then a
18public relations job with the California Medical Association;
19and
20 WHEREAS, Ed Collins married Dorothy Jane McCann and they
21lived in Kensington, California for the next 13 years; in 1977,

1he accepted a position with the American Association of Medical
2Society Executives and his family settled in Deerfield; and
3 WHEREAS, Ed Collins decided to return to journalism and
4obtained a master's degree in journalism from Columbia College
5in Chicago in 2000; he began to work for the Lake County
6News-Sun newspaper as a general assignment reporter for the
7next 14 years; he retired in December 2014; and
8 WHEREAS, Ed Collins is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and
9his son, Edward James Collins III; therefore, be it
10 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12Edward James "Ed" Collins Jr. and extend our sincere
13condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
14him; and be it further
15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Ed Collins as an expression of our
17deepest sympathy.
