| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Frank Harris Jr. of Waukegan, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on April 15, 2020; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Frank Harris Jr. was born in Rosedale, Mississippi | ||||||
6 | to Frank Harris Sr. and Hattie Mae Wilson on December 30, 1929; | ||||||
7 | he moved to Waukegan as a teen and stayed with an aunt and | ||||||
8 | cousin; he graduated from Waukegan High School in 1949; he was | ||||||
9 | drafted into the U.S. Army, where he completed training at Fort | ||||||
10 | Polk, Louisiana, and served in Germany from 1950 to 1953; he | ||||||
11 | married Kate M. Davidson in Rosedale, Mississippi; together, | ||||||
12 | they moved to Waukegan and had four children; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Frank Harris Jr. worked at U.S. Steel before being | ||||||
14 | drafted into the U.S. Army; he later worked at the Prudential | ||||||
15 | Insurance Company, the Lake County Sheriff's Office, Mac | ||||||
16 | Realty, and Key Realty; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Frank Harris Jr. served as Alderman of the 5th | ||||||
18 | Ward for the City of Waukegan for 12 years; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Frank Harris Jr. served as the NAACP president in | ||||||
20 | Lake County from the mid to late 1960s; he forged partnerships | ||||||
21 | with numerous organizations, including the League of Women |

1 | Voters; he was a passionate advocate for voter education, | ||||||
2 | registration, mobilization, and fair housing in Waukegan; he | ||||||
3 | also helped integrate Waukegan's neighborhoods and public | ||||||
4 | schools; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Frank Harris Jr. was a member of the Shiloh | ||||||
6 | Baptist Church of Waukegan, where he was a choir member and a | ||||||
7 | Sunday school teacher; he enjoyed singing, playing pool, and | ||||||
8 | lounging in his recliner while watching the Chicago Cubs, | ||||||
9 | Chicago Bears, and Chicago Bulls; he will be remembered as | ||||||
10 | someone who helped others; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Frank Harris Jr. was preceded in death by his son, | ||||||
12 | Bruce Andrew Harris, and his sister, Hazel M. Hasty; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Frank Harris Jr. is survived by his wife of 66 | ||||||
14 | years, Kate M. Harris; his sons, Ronald Steven Harris and Frank | ||||||
15 | Harris III; his daughter, Karen Kae Harris; his sister, Charles | ||||||
16 | L. Tapley; and his grandchildren, Aisha N. Harris, Zakiya D. | ||||||
17 | Harris, Alanah G. Harris, Madison A. Harris, and Maya S. | ||||||
18 | Harris; therefore, be it

19 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
20 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
21 | Frank Harris Jr. and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
22 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |

2 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
3 | presented to the family of Frank Harris Jr. as an expression of | ||||||
