2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Gary Shannon Upton of Bloomington, who | ||||||
4 | passed away August 24, 2020; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Gary Upton was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to | ||||||
6 | Mollie Day and Myles Upton on May 24, 1943; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, A proud member of the United States Army and a | ||||||
8 | Vietnam War veteran, Gary Upton retired from the Army as a | ||||||
9 | first sergeant in 1985 after 24 years of service; after his | ||||||
10 | career in the Army, Gary Upton served as a deputy sheriff and | ||||||
11 | worked for the United States Army Finance Center in | ||||||
12 | Indianapolis, Indiana and the United States Army Distribution | ||||||
13 | and Publications Center in St Louis, Missouri; he officially | ||||||
14 | retired in 2006; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Gary Upton was an avid fan of the St. Louis | ||||||
16 | Cardinals; he was a quiet man who enjoyed spending time with | ||||||
17 | family and going out for coffee at his "home away from home", | ||||||
18 | Shannon's Five Star Restaurant; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Gary Upton was preceded in death by his parents | ||||||
20 | and multiple siblings; and

1 | WHEREAS, Gary Upton is survived by his wife of 53 years, | ||||||
2 | Darla Jean Upton; his daughters, Jodi Upton Hicks (Sam Howard) | ||||||
3 | and Jennifer Upton Galanti (Paul); his sons, Scott Upton | ||||||
4 | (Laurie) and Kevin Schaefer (Rebecca); his grandchildren, | ||||||
5 | Peyton Hicks, Justin, Austin, and Miles Upton, and Carson | ||||||
6 | Schaefer; and his step-grandchildren, Jonathan, Brandon, and | ||||||
7 | Celia Galanti; therefore, be it

8 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
9 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
10 | Gary Shannon Upton and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
11 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
12 | further

13 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
14 | presented to the family of Gary Upton as an expression of our | ||||||
15 | deepest sympathy.
