SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Nancy Staunton, who passed away on
4November 24, 2019 at the age of 90; and
5 WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton was born Anna Jean O'Malley but was
6known as Nancy; she was born on November 18, 1929 in Englewood
7to Irish immigrants, the youngest child of four; and
8 WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton attended St. Brendan's Church and
9Mercy High School; her father died when she was just a
10teenager, and her sister Sarah Margaret, who was ten years
11older, played a large part in her upbringing; she stayed close
12to her sister, as well as her other siblings until they all
13passed away; and
14 WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton earned a Bachelor of Science in
15Nursing in 1951 from St. Xavier College and took a nursing
16position at Mercy hospital, all while working as a part-time
17courier nurse for the Santa Fe Railroad on trips between
18Chicago and Los Angeles; and
19 WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton met her husband, Patrick Staunton,
20in 1952, and they had six children together before moving to
21their home on Linden Avenue, where they lived for the next 28

1years; and
2 WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton joined the League of Women Voters
3in 1967 and spent over three years working on various issues
4with the Board of Health Committee, the Racial Diversity Task
5Force, and the Village Services Committee, as well as a
6committee that performed an extensive study of Cook County
7Government; her contributions were recognized with the Hazel
8Hansen Award; and
9 WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton returned to school in 1976 and
10earned a Master of Public Health from the University of
11Illinois at Chicago, which led to work in health care planning,
12primarily with the Chicago Suburban Health Services Agency; and
13 WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton was elected an Oak Park village
14trustee in 1985 and faced numerous complex issues during her
15six year tenure, including gun control, recognition of AIDS,
16policies on non-discrimination, recycling, economic
17development, union/management disputes, and an investigation
18of the police department conducted by author and lawyer, Scott
19Turow; and
20 WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton served on the Institutional Review
21Board of Loyola University Medical Center and the boards of the
22Housing Center and the Family Services and Mental Health

1Center; and
2 WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton also served on the Oak Park Board
3of Health and helped start and staff a hospice group for the
4Community Nursing Service in Oak Park, all while volunteering
5at a variety of local organizations, including the Hemingway
6Birthplace Home and Museum; and
7 WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton and her husband, Pat, retired and
8spent time at their cottage in Coloma, Michigan; in her last
9three years, she spent her time in Walnut Creek, California
10with her daughters, Mary and Anne; and
11 WHEREAS, Nancy Staunton is survived by her children, Kevin
12(Maria), Mary, Anne, Brian (Liz), Jane (Max), and Tom, and her
13grandchildren, Jack, Kyle, Luke, Will, Van, Kevin, and Finn;
14therefore, be it
15 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Nancy Staunton and extend our sincere condolences to her
18family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
19further
20 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Nancy Staunton as an expression of
