    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring the life of Robert E. Miller of Michigan City.

    Whereas, Robert E. Miller was born on January 17th, 1932, in South Bend, and passed away on October 18th, 2011, at his home in Michigan City;

    Whereas, Mr. Miller attended Central Catholic High School;

    Whereas, Mr. Miller was offered a scholarship to play football for the University of Idaho, but instead he chose to serve his country in the Army during the Korean War;

    Whereas, On his return home, Mr. Miller was able to attend his beloved University of Notre Dame with the help of a G.I. Bill scholarship, from which he graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce, and the title of Bengal Bouts Boxing Champion;

    Whereas, In 1956 Mr. Miller married Gertrude "Gerti" Miller, nee Kramer, the love of his life, who survives him and continues to reside in Michigan City;

    Whereas, Mr. Miller began his professional career as a teacher at Coolspring Elementary School in Michigan City, later moving on to positions as a counselor at Barker Junior High and as the principal of Krueger Junior High, at the time the first principal to have served at Krueger in over twenty years;

    Whereas, Mr. Miller concluded his professional life as a career counselor for all Michigan City Area Schools, retiring with fond

memories of Representative Scott Pelath's father as his favorite student;

    Whereas, Outside of his professional service to the community, Mr. Miller committed himself to local political and civic work, serving for sixteen years as a LaPorte County Councilor, and an active member of the Moose Family Center #980, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, the Saint Joseph Young Men's Society, the Young Democrats, the Coolspring Democratic Club, the Polish Business and Professional Club, the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, R.S.V.P. of LaPorte County, and the board of his retirement community, The Arbors in Michigan City; and,

    Whereas, For his lifelong service to his neighbors and community, Mr. Miller was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Joe Kernan in 2004; Therefore:

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives recognizes and honors the life and work of Scott E. Miller, extends to his family the sincerest condolences of its members on the occasion of his passing, and expresses its thanks for a lifetime of dedicated service to his neighbors and to his community.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to Mr. Miller's family.
