        A HOUSE RESOLUTION urging the legislative council to establish an interim study committee to study novelty lighters.
    

    Whereas, Novelty lighters have features that are attractive to children, including visual effects, flashing lights, musical sounds, and toy-like designs;

    Whereas, The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled thousands of novelty lighters since 1996 due to the dangers of such lighters to public safety; and

    Whereas, In Indiana and the United States fires set by children have resulted in many deaths and millions of dollars in property damage and destruction: Therefore,



Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:


    SECTION 1. That the legislative council is urged to establish an interim study committee to study novelty lighters.
    SECTION 2. That the committee, if established, shall operate under the direction of the legislative council, and that the committee shall issue a final report when directed to do so by the council.
