A HOUSE RESOLUTION to honor Representative
William "Bill" Crawford on his retirement from the Indiana
House of Representatives.
Whereas, Representative Bill Crawford has represented his
constituents, the citizens of House District 98, at the Statehouse
for forty years, and is proud to be the longest-serving African-
American state legislator in the country, and the Dean of the
Indianapolis Delegation;
Whereas, Since his election to the Indiana House of Representatives in November 1972, Representative Crawford has consistently dedicated himself to two projects at the Statehouse, the crafting of the state budget every biennium as a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, and his ongoing fight for equality and opportunity for the neglected and disadvantaged, sometimes achieving both ends with the same means, as exemplified by his early success in inserting a line-item into the budget to provide restitution to wrongfully- imprisoned Indianapolis man, and more recently in providing
for a $69-million renovation of Ivy Tech's Near Northside
campus;
Whereas, Representative Crawford is a proud veteran of the
United States Navy, having seen service during the Korean
War;
Whereas, Representative Crawford has many times
received national recognition for his work on behalf of
education, poverty and the promotion of minority- and women-
owned businesses, and has won the respect of all sides of the
political debate locally and across the country as a true
statesman; and,
Whereas, Outside of the Statehouse, Representative
Crawford has dedicated himself to his neighbors and his
community by holding public forums on legislative and civic
issues, through his work with the Concerned Clergy of
Indianapolis advocating on behalf of justice and equality, and
through his mentorship of young children and young legislators
alike: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives thanks Representative Bill Crawford for his dedicated and honorable service to his constituency and to the state of Indiana, and wishes him happiness and contentment in his retirement.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to Representative Bill Crawford and his family.
