A SENATE RESOLUTION urging the Indiana Department of Transportation to review and study mass transit proposals.
January 7, 2013, read first time and referred to Committee on Homeland Security,
Transportation and Veterans Affairs.
MADAM PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
A SENATE RESOLUTION urging the Indiana Department of
Transportation to review and study mass transit proposals.
Whereas, Well-constructed and properly maintained roadways are
an essential part of a healthy and growing economy and are necessary
to ensure the safety of Indiana motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians;
Whereas, Mass transit is needed to act as a pressure valve to ease
traffic on the streets and major highways into cities throughout our
state;
Whereas, The current price of oil and gasoline creates a hardship
for Hoosiers commuting from the suburbs to the cities each day;
Whereas, Mass transit gives Hoosiers who would otherwise be
unable to travel around our cities the access needed to be
self-sufficient;
Whereas, Many entry level jobs in the inner city are not accessible
by mass transit, and those residents seeking these employment
opportunities are often unable to reach them; and
Whereas, The development of transportation alternatives such as
mass transit is a critical component of planning for our state's future
transportation system and demands an assessment of available
resources and their allocation: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate urges the Indiana
Department of Transportation to review and study the topic of
expanding mass transit in Indiana, including the proposal supported by
the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, to determine the needs of our
state.
SECTION 2. That copies of this resolution be transmitted by the
Secretary of the Senate to the commissioner of the Indiana Department
of Transportation.
