Senator Knezek offered the following resolution:
Senate Resolution No. 115.
A resolution to support the city of Detroit’s efforts in the creation of the proposed Joe Louis Greenway.
Whereas, Michigan’s wealth of trails and greenways create healthy recreation and transportation opportunities by providing people of all ages with attractive, safe, accessible and low- or no-cost places to cycle, walk, hike, and jog; and
Whereas, In addition to providing a safe place for people to enjoy recreational activities, greenways and trails often function as viable transportation corridors. Trails can be a crucial element to a seamless urban or regional multi-modal transportation system; and
Whereas, A pedestrian and bike pathway will, as Joe Louis did, bring people together by connecting neighborhoods throughout the city to the Detroit RiverWalk; and
Whereas, The 26 mile loop of bike and pedestrian pathway will not only provide a place for people of all abilities to safely walk, bike, and run while connecting neighborhoods, parks, schools, historic sites, commercial corridors, public transit, and much more, but also provide safe passage to Detroit from neighboring Hamtramck, Highland Park, Ferndale, and Dearborn; and
Whereas, The Joe Louis Greenway will be part of a nearly 240 mile network of pathways that provide seamless access to transit, making the city more economically competitive and expanding opportunities for residents; and
Whereas, The city of Detroit will soon tear down the Joe Louis Arena, which was a space the city and hockey team used to excel in sports and honor Joe Louis.
Whereas, Joe Louis changed boxing and epitomized greatness; and
Whereas, It is only fitting the city create this greenway entitled “Joe Louis Greenway” to ensure that it continues to honor him forever; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate, That we support and celebrate the contributions Joe Louis made to the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan as well as recognize the importance greenways play in our communities; and be it further
Resolved by the Senate, That the members of this legislative body support the efforts of the city of Detroit to create the “Joe Louis Greenway.”
