1.1A House resolution
1.2expressing the sense of the House in opposition to the International Olympic
1.3Committee (IOC) decision to remove freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling from
1.4the Olympic Games beginning in 2020.
1.5WHEREAS, the State of Minnesota is home to thousands of collegiate and professional
1.6wrestling athletes and many that advance to national and international competition; and
1.7WHEREAS, the United States is a key competitor in international wrestling competition,
1.8especially the Olympic Games, with 124 medals having been awarded to the United States
1.9throughout history; and
1.10WHEREAS, the sport of wrestling is fundamentally important to the success of the United
1.11States in overall Olympic Games competition; and
1.12WHEREAS, Greco-Roman wrestling has been part of Olympic competition since 1896,
1.13including participation by a Minnesotan on the United States team in every summer Olympic
1.14Games since 1968; and
1.15WHEREAS, wrestling is a foundational activity for Minnesota's youth and overall
1.16economic activity, which is made more robust by the ultimate potential for Olympic success; and
1.17WHEREAS, wrestling is a foundational sport for the University of Minnesota, and
1.18Minnesota has a unique asset in Head Coach J Robinson; and
1.19WHEREAS, the city of Minneapolis hopes to contend for consideration as a future site of
1.20the Olympic Games; NOW, THEREFORE,
2.1BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the State of Minnesota that it
2.2opposes the IOC ruling that freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling not be included in the 25
2.3athletic competitions of the Olympic Games and request reconsideration by the committee given
2.4the immense local and global impact said ruling will have.
