A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2015 MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE, FISHERIES AND PARKS LAWFIT CHALLENGE TEAM FOR WINNING THE 14TH ANNUAL NATIONAL LAWFIT CHALLENGE.

     WHEREAS, a team of conservation officers from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) won the 14th Annual National LawFit Challenge, which was held in Olive Branch, Mississippi, on July 16-18, 2015; and

     WHEREAS, the National LawFit Challenge attracts competitors from police departments, sheriff's offices and multiple state agencies from around the country, including some as far away as New Jersey; and

     WHEREAS, the competition consisted of six events held over three days with events consisting of:  bench press, 1.5 mile run, one minute timed situps, a flexibility test, pull-ups and a suspect pursuit course; and

     WHEREAS, the members of the 2015 MDWFP LawFit Team are:  Lieutenant Chris Reed (team captain), Sergeant Marcus Christon, Sergeant Ron McMillan, Private Justin Gates, Private Derrick Scott and Private Justin Adams; and

     WHEREAS, not only did the 2015 MDWFP LawFit Team win the National LawFit Challenge, but they did so by posting a record high score for a four-man team of 1,599 points, beating the previous four-man team record of 1,515 points set by the 2014 Mississippi Highway Patrol's LawFit Challenge Team; and

     WHEREAS, the members of the MDWFP LawFit Challenge Team set numerous national records:  the four-man team scored 1,599 points (Reed, Christon, Gates and Scott); the two-man team scored 819 points by Christon and Gates, and 780 points by Reed and Scott; Marcus Christon broke the previous record by having 67 pull-ups, with the previous record being 51 pull-ups set by Justin Gates in 2014; in the bench press division, Justin Gates lifted 330 pounds which is 221% of his body weight, with the previous record being 214%; and

     WHEREAS, Marcus Christon scored the most points of any competitor with 418 winning first place, beating out Justin Gates who scored 401 points, and the only other competitor to score over 400 points in the 14-year history of the event was Master Sergeant John Perkins of the Mississippi Highway Patrol who scored 403 points in 2008; and

     WHEREAS, four of the top five competitors in the 2015 National LawFit Challenge were members of the MDWFP LawFit Challenge Team as follows:  first place Marcus Christon 418 points; second place Justin Gates 401 points; fourth place Derrick Scott 390 points; and fifth place Chris Reed 390 points; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize the excellent and professional law enforcement agencies of this state, such as the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks conservation officers, whose skills are unmatched when put up against all other competitors:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the LawFit Challenge Team of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, for its impressive victory in the 2015 National LawFit Challenge, and for the many records, both team and individual, that were set by the MDWFP team in its victory, and extend our gratitude to each member of the MDWFP LawFit Challenge Team for their dedicated service to the State of Mississippi.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the members of the 2015 Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks LawFit Challenge Team and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
