A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE MISSISSIPPI OPERA ASSOCIATION, INC., UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS HISTORIC ANNIVERSARY ACKNOWLEDGING THE CELEBRATION OF 70 YEARS OF PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE.

     WHEREAS, the Jackson Opera Guild, which was organized in 1945 by Mignonne Caldwell, marks the celebration of its 70th year anniversary in this year 2016; and

     WHEREAS, at the time of its organization, the Jackson Opera Guild was one of only 12 organizations of its kind in the United States and is currently the ninth oldest continuously producing professional opera company in the country; and

     WHEREAS, after an extended period of heightened anticipation, the speculation as to the future of the Guild was solidified with its reorganization in 1970 when it became the Mississippi Opera Association, Incorporated, with a state board of directors; and

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi Opera Association, Incorporated's aim is to promote and encourage the enjoyment, study and appreciation of opera, to help in the development of operatic talent and provide cultural enrichment for the public through operatic performances; and

     WHEREAS, on November 27, 1945, the Jackson Opera Guild presented its first performance in the Bailey School Auditorium of Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana," sung in Italian, featuring some of Jackson's most talented performers, including:  Mignonne Caldwell, Marion Giddens, Eugene Loper, Ouida Woody and Magnolia Coullet; and

     WHEREAS, in celebration of its 70th anniversary the Mississippi Opera Association, Incorporated, will present Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, on Saturday, November 21, 2016; the first half of the performance commemorates the first opera performed by the Jackson Opera Guild in 1945, and the second half features arias that emphasize some of the high points in the company's rich and storied history; and

     WHEREAS, the historic presentation will feature Kristin Johnson-Gunn as Santuza, Viola Dacus as Lola, John Christopher Adams as Turridu and J. Taylor Hightower as Alfio; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize outstanding contributions to culture like that of the Mississippi Opera Association, Incorporated, whose 70 years of performances have engaged, enthralled, and inspired its many patrons and brought honor to the City of Jackson, Mississippi, and the entire State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the commitment and dedication of the conductors, directors and performers of the Mississippi Opera Association, Incorporated, on the occasion of the organization's historic 70th anniversary and extend warmest wishes for continued prosperity and success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mississippi Opera Board President Elbert Bivins and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
