A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE FLORENCE HIGH SCHOOL LADY EAGLES BASKETBALL TEAM UPON COMPLETING AN EXCELLENT SEASON.
WHEREAS, on March 10, 2016, the Florence High School Lady Eagles completed an excellent 24-win season, winning 14 games by more than 20 points and amassing a 7-2 record in league play; and
WHEREAS, ranked number one for much of the season, the Lady Eagles proved their mettle time after time, winning the Rankin County Tournament by beating both Brandon and Northwest Rankin High School, and beating Cleveland High School in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic; and
WHEREAS, through uncompromising hard work and dedication, the Lady Eagles earned a trip to Mississippi High School Activities Association State Championship at the Mississippi Coliseum, in Jackson, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, although they came up just short of a championship, the Lady Eagles proved to be an excellent team, full of heart and made up of many leaders; and
WHEREAS, leading and mentoring the Lady Eagles was Head Coach Darrin Chancellor, along with assistant coaches Danielle Martian, Kevin Williams and Jason Thomas; and
WHEREAS, the Lady Eagles talented roster includes: Danyelle Lewis, Ashlynn Mitchell, MiKayla Patton, Ashlynn Spencer, Keyona Whitaker, Jayla Williams, Tiyunna Dixon, Sarah Allen, Alexis Jones, Skylar Nell, Candace Jackson, Alexandrea Miller, Jada Payton, Chasity Snyder and Elonna Washington; and
WHEREAS, while dominant on the basketball court, this talented team also earned acclaim in the classroom, qualifying for the Scholar Athlete Team Award given by the MHSAA for achieving a 3.5 grade point average; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and honor the achievements of student athletes such as the Florence High School Lady Eagles Basketball Team who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Florence High School Lady Eagles Basketball Team upon completing an excellent 24-win season, and extend best wishes for continued success in all of their future academic and athletic endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Head Coach Darrin Chancellor, Florence High School Athletic Director Brad Cliburn and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
