A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING CARRIE JONES FOR HER MANY HISTORIC CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SPORT OF GOLF AND RECOGNIZING MARCH 26, 2011, AS CARRIE JONES GOLF DAY.

     WHEREAS, March 26, 2011, will be recognized as Carrie Jones Golf Day; and

     WHEREAS, Carrie Jones has been a pioneer in the sport of golf, both as a female and African-American female golfer; and     WHEREAS, she began playing golf in 1961 at the tender age of 22, and finished second in her first tournament; and

     WHEREAS, she advanced from that win to capture the title in  the 1962 United Golfers Association's National Tournament at Fuller Park in Memphis, Tennessee, where she competed against 30 women; and

     WHEREAS, she has won numerous tournaments throughout her life, including the Central State National Championship in Omaha, Nebraska, where she won twice; and

     WHEREAS, she has played in many amateur tournaments with the United States Golf Association in Tampa, Florida, West Palm Beach, Florida, Charlotte, North Carolina, Memphis, Tennessee, Philadelphia, Mississippi, and Jackson, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, these varied competitions have garnered Carrie Jones approximately 130 wins, with her most recent victory occurring in September 2007, at the Mississippi State Senior Championship in Canton, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, her passion, dedication and accomplishments in the sport of golf have increased notoriety in the sport of golf for  women, especially African-American women; and

     WHEREAS, she is a member of the Nine Iron Golf Club, the oldest African-American golf club in the State of Mississippi, and an honorary member of the Lady Drivers Golf Club; and

     WHEREAS, she has won the Bay Point Country Club of Brandon's Golf Championship ten times; and

     WHEREAS, although women in golf continue to emerge, Carrie Jones, at age 71, has a handicap of seven, with her lowest handicap as four, and continues to compete in golf tournaments after 48 years; and

     WHEREAS, her contributions and sacrifices to the sport of golf in Mississippi are a cut above the rest; and

     WHEREAS, as a result of her passion and dedication to the sport, the Lady Drivers Golf Club and the Nine Iron Golf Club are recognizing her courage, sacrifice and fortitude to the sport by declaring the last Saturday in March as Carrie Jones Golf Day; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize the historic accomplishments of our citizens such as Carrie Jones who add positive notoriety to our state by participating in sports:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, The Senate concurring therein, That we do hereby commend Mrs. Carrie Jones for her many historic accomplishments in the sport of golf and recognize March 26, 2011, as Carrie Jones Golf Day.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Carrie Jones and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
