A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING COLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI, NATIVE JASMINE MURRAY UPON BEING CROWNED MISS MISSISSIPPI 2014 AND SUCCESSFUL TOP 10 FINISH IN THE 2014 MISS AMERICA PAGEANT.

     WHEREAS, Jasmine Murray, 22, native of Columbus, Mississippi, and resident of Starkville, Mississippi, a beautiful and astonishingly talented young lady, was crowned Miss Mississippi 2014 on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at the Vicksburg Convention Center, capturing the highly pursued No. 1 spot sought after by a field of 41 young ladies who competed for the coveted title to represent Mississippi in the 2014 Miss America Pageant; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to taking home the crystallized tiara, Jasmine, an exceptionally promising broadcast journalism major at Mississippi State University and the reigning Miss Riverland, was also the recipient of a $10,000.00 scholarship to accompany her Miss Mississippi crown; and

     WHEREAS, as Miss Mississippi, Jasmine represented the State of Mississippi in the 2014 Miss America Pageant which was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on September 10-14, 2014, finishing in the Top 10 finalists with the style, poise and regality of a true Mississippi Belle; and

     WHEREAS, the daughter of Ms. Lisa Murray of Starkville, Jasmine, a graduate of the Mississippi School of the Arts, is no stranger to the world of pageantry, as her history of pageant participation and success includes Mississippi Outstanding Teen, in which she won the active wear preliminary award, finished fourth runner up in 2006 before winning the title in 2007 hands down, enabling her to serve as the state's representative ambassador in the Miss America Outstanding Teen Pageant, where she placed tenth overall, in addition to being crowned Miss Spirit of the South 2012 and Miss Mississippi State University in 2012; and

     WHEREAS, her collegiate academic honors at Mississippi State University include:  being a President's and Dean's Lists scholar; National Society of Collegiate Scholars; United States Dream Academy Scholarship recipient; and the United States Achievement Academy; and

     WHEREAS, having overcome the odds in her fight for life as an infant, Jasmine's ambitious twilight ignited into a radiant glow when she began singing at the tender age of three years, spawning her rise from humble Mississippi beginnings to the overwhelming sensation of mega-stardom as a fan favorite on the eighth season of Fox's American Idol, after taking a chance audition as Contestant #84122 while in Orlando, Florida, attending the 2008 Miss America's Outstanding Teen Pageant, and securing a golden ticket to Hollywood, where she skyrocketed to a Top 13 finish, becoming the first Mississippian to reach Idol's final phase of competition; and

     WHEREAS, following her Idol departure, she appeared on Live with Regis and Kelly and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, in addition to having been interviewed by Extra, Entertainment Tonight and CNN, performed at the Delta Fair in Memphis, Tennessee, opened a Michigan State basketball game with the national anthem, and she has visited and performed at the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Jasmine, who prides herself in education, adopted "13 Going on 30," as her Miss Mississippi platform, aimed at teaching young girls to embrace their age, represented the Magnolia State at the Miss America competion with such style, grace, elegance and poise wrapped in a regal gown that is exemplary of the humility akin to a Mississippi Queen; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to acknowledge those achieving excellence, and it is only fitting that we bring special recognition to Jasmine Murray, a lovely, talented young lady who, as Miss Mississippi 2014, is a source of great honor and pride to her family, community and the entire State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Jasmine Murray upon being crowned Miss Mississippi 2014, her successful top 10 finish in the 2014 Miss America Pageant and extend sincerest wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Miss Murray and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
