A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE PERSONAL JOURNEY OF MISSISSIPPI NATIVE, PATRICK HOUSE, IN HIS QUEST TO IMPROVE HIS HEALTH AND QUALITY OF LIFE, ENDURING THE RIGORS OF A HIGH-INTENSITY AND STRICTLY STRUCTURED EXERCISE REGIMEN TO BECOME THE SEASON-10 WINNER OF NBC'S HIT REALITY, SELF-HELP SERIES, "THE BIGGEST LOSER."

     WHEREAS, born in Brandon, Mississippi, to Nick and Sally House on June 22, 1982, Patrick House persevered through declining health and physical impediments, to give birth to a new and healthier lifestyle after being named the Season-10 winner of NBC's hit reality, self-help series, "The Biggest Loser"; and

     WHEREAS, a Class of 2000 graduate of Brandon High School, Patrick was a standout offensive lineman, and attended Delta State University on scholarship to play football while pursuing his degree in business management; and

     WHEREAS, it was during his collegiate years that his battle with weight escalated; as an offensive lineman for the "Fighting Statesmen"/"Fighting Okra" Football Team he consumed large quantities of food to maintain that position, and when an injury permanently forced him to the sideline he continued to maintain the same diet; and

     WHEREAS, Patrick and his mother had tried out for Season 5 of "The Biggest Loser" and made it to the final casting call before being cut, but a producer from the show contacted him this past March and invited him to another try-out for Season 10 in New Orleans, and after beating out 350,000 other potential contestants nationwide, he was chosen to be on the show; and

     WHEREAS, in January 2010, the 400-pound, 6'2" Vicksburg resident fell upon hard times after losing his job as a food sales representative, deeply in debt, driving a junker of a car and depressed about means of providing for his family, and upon his arrival at the Biggest Loser Ranch in June 2010 he was noticeably in much worse condition than his competitors, only to be compounded by learning of serious issues affecting his health, including:  sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and pre-diabetic condition; and

     WHEREAS, when he started his quest on the Biggest Loser Ranch in California, he competed and trained for three months, outlasting 20 other contestants to make it to the final three, and upon return to Vicksburg, he spent time working out at the local YMCA and making healthy choices with regards to diet and exercise, making a determined effort to have a better, healthier life with his wife of five years, the former Bradley Callender, and two young sons, Colton and Caden; and

     WHEREAS, throughout the training process Patrick was fighting to have a better quality of life for himself and his family and also wanted to give Mississippi, the nation's most obese state, something to celebrate, claiming his victory and new lease on life and health as, "a lifestyle change, not a diet anymore."; and

     WHEREAS, having run his first marathon in October, the nation's eyes were fixated upon him on December 14, 2010, when the  28-year-old Patrick, who also won a new Ford Edge, early on in the competition with the assistance of his compassionate, close-knit competitors, became the first Mississippian to be chosen as "The Biggest Loser" after losing a total of 181 pounds or 45.3% of his total body weight to win the $250,000.00 cash prize; and

     WHEREAS, capitalizing on his personal struggles and his  well-earned triumphs, Patrick has now undertaken his next challenge of helping overweight children by accepting a position with Mind Stream Academy, a boarding school for overweight teens in Bluffton, South Carolina, avowing to mentor these teens with the same tenacity that served as his drive and motivation as he fully understands the needs of these children, having once walked in their shoes; and

     WHEREAS, Patrick has truly taken the "Pay It Forward" theme of the show to heart in his quest to help children battle obesity and come out winners, setting up the Patrick House Foundation offering scholarships to teens interested in attending the school; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize the mettle and perseverance of such a remarkably driven individual as Patrick, whose appearance on "The Biggest Loser" and subsequent change in lifestyle and healthy living choices has brought great pride and esteem to himself and to the State of Mississippi, and serves as a motivational icon for the benefits of healthy living:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the personal journey of Mississippi native, Patrick House, in his quest to improve his health and quality of life and for enduring the rigors of a high-intensity and strictly structured exercise regimen to become the Season-10 winner of NBC's hit reality, self-help series, "The Biggest Loser" and express most sincere wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Patrick House and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
