House Concurrent Resolution 57

(As Adopted by House and Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION HONORING AND RECOGNIZING THE LAUDABLE EFFORTS OF THE NORTHROP GRUMMAN CORPORATION OF MISSISSIPPI AND ITS EMPLOYEES FOR THEIR ZEAL, DEVOTION AND DEDICATION RENDERED BY CONTRIBUTING FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND RELIEF TO THE FAMILIES AND VICTIMS IN HAITI IN THE WAKE AND THE AFTERMATH CAUSED BY THE DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE ON JANUARY 12, 2010.

WHEREAS, on January 12, 2010, a catastrophic earthquake unleashed its fury on the nation of Haiti, uprooting families from their places of abode, destroying their safe havens of spiritual refuge and shaking their religious faiths; and

WHEREAS, even in the midst of the turmoil and seemingly unanswerable uncertainties, the spirit of brotherly love and Christian fortitude proved itself true and reigned supreme throughout the State of Mississippi in response to the appeals for humanitarian aid and through efforts such as Mississippi's Northrop Grumman Corporation's pledge to provide up to $1,000,000.00 for earthquake relief in the ravaged and emotionally plagued Haiti; and

WHEREAS, Mississippians seized the reins, leading in the humanitarian effort of recovery and relief in return for the international gesture shown to us during the most perilous times in our nation's history that a natural disaster rocked our nation and state to its very core; and

WHEREAS, following the initiative of its leaders, Northrop Grumman rolled up its sleeves and worked relentlessly, tirelessly and selflessly to allocate monetary resources to assist in the recovery, relief and rebuilding efforts of Haiti; and

WHEREAS, the company will contribute $500,000.00 through five agencies supporting the Haiti recovery effort:  AmeriCares, American Red Cross International, World Vision International, Care and the Yale Haiti Earthquake Fund, in addition to committing another $500,000.00 to an employee matching gift program for earthquake relief; and

WHEREAS, the unceasing outpouring of compassion and sympathy of this company that has committed itself financially to aid those in distress, even in these most difficult economic times, are testaments to the warmth, care and concerns Mississippians share for mankind, as Northrop Grumman joins the world community in concern for all those affected by the earthquake in Haiti domestically and internationally; and

WHEREAS, Northrop Grumman Corporation, a leading global security company providing innovative systems, products, and solutions in aerospace, electronics, information systems, shipbuilding and technical services to government and commercial customers worldwide, is also the epitome of the stalwart example of work in action through its humanitarian efforts to alleviate the despair of its fellowman, by serving as its brother's keeper; and

WHEREAS, the benevolent generosity of this company and its more than 120,000 employees is working in a collaboratively unified manner to ease the mounting tensions, soothe the broken hearted, provide the basic necessities of life, and to restore hope to millions whose lives and memories of what used to be, were all but crushed and dismantled beneath a sea of structural debris and rampantly deteriorating building infrastructure; and

WHEREAS, this company has stepped out of an oasis of calm and normalcy into a sea of utter desolation seemingly unfathomable to behold, in efforts of rekindling the flame of life and hope in Haiti; and

WHEREAS, it is because of Mississippi's not so far removed encounter with tumultuous adversity in the form of a life-altering natural disaster, that we are a state capable of empathizing and sympathizing with our brethren in Haiti, and are enabled to impart the spirit of unwavering resilience and endurance to those affected, and we recognize, honor and commend these victims, who are not only victims, but survivors; and

WHEREAS, humanity as never before seen, has been personified through the most ordinary of individuals to the vanguard of the elite, as evidenced in a smiling face to lift one's countenance, a helping hand extended to pick up the broken pieces, a willingness to walk a mile in another's shoes and a heart that bleeds at the misfortune of our fellowmen, and reassured and refortified by the efforts of rescuers who work methodically and feverishly to remove the bodies of those clinging to life by harnessing and surviving on their destiny to live from mountains of debris weeks after the calamitous event; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend and recognize the efforts of companies like Northrop Grumman which gave of its time, labor and monetary resources to extend the unsurpassable gesture of brotherly love to its fellowman:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby honor and recognize the laudable efforts of the Northrop Grumman Corporation of Mississippi and its employees for their zeal and devotion and dedication rendered by contributing financial support and relief to the families and victims in Haiti in the wake and the aftermath caused by the devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010, and express gratitude, sympathy, understanding, but above all, love to all of those whose lives were touched by the effects of the Haiti earthquake, and pray for them:

Courage to withstand the unforeseeable features of nature, the bravery to hold on and survive and the self-determination to sustain and rebuild.

Acceptance of those life occurrences for which we have no understanding why, while safeguarding the memories of before in distant lands--dreaming and telling unveiled stories of confusion and recognizable love and kindness shown from all over the world, and documented as unparalleled history.

Comfort to the bereaved and grief stricken, and eternal peace to those lives lost and unaccounted, that their souls rest in the comforts of serenity as once afforded by the sand's sparkling gleam, the ocean's ebb and flow, and the tranquil winds on the calmest coastal day.

To God be the glory.  Amen.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Northrop Grumman Corporation and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
