A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING ALLEN NICHOLSON KURR OF BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA (BSA) TROOP 146 ON THE HONOR OF RECEIVING THE EAGLE SCOUT AWARD.

     WHEREAS, Allen Nicholson Kurr, son of Jeff and Karen Kurr, of Oxford, Mississippi, and a member of Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Troop 146, had the honor of receiving the Eagle Scout Award in 2009; and

     WHEREAS, Allen has been a Scout since first grade as a Tiger Cub, earning the Arrow of Light, the highest award achievable, as a Webelo Cub Scout; and

     WHEREAS, through his years as a Boy Scout, Allen has met all the requirements and has earned the required merit badges to fulfill his duties and obligations of maintaining and promoting the mission and vision of the Boy Scouts of America; and

     WHEREAS, Allen has contributed countless hours of community service, earned numerous merit badges, spent many weeks camping, was inducted into the Order of the Arrow, attended the Boy Scout National Jamboree in 2006, participated in an Extreme Expedition,

where he backpacked, went whitewater rafting, horseback riding, rappelling and cave exploring where he was one of the few to choose the advanced spelunking tunnels and cave paths; and

     WHEREAS, Allen financed his Eagle Scout service project by constructing and selling Blue Bird houses using a 30-year-old pattern designed by his maternal grandfather and namesake, the late Joe Allen Patterson, also an Eagle Scout, and used these funds to construct an outdoor chapel consisting of permanent benches and a raised speaker platform for Regents School of Oxford, located at the historic site of College Hill, north of Oxford, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, as an Eagle Scout, Allen follows in the footsteps of a number of family members who have also achieved the honor of the Eagle Scout rank including his maternal grandfather, the late Joe Allen Patterson of Jackson, Mississippi; godfather and cousin, J. Ronnie Davis of New Orleans, Louisiana; and cousin, Christopher Kurr of Covington, Louisiana; and

     WHEREAS, the sponsor of Boy Scout Troop 146 is North Oxford Baptist Church where Allen is an active member and youth leader under the direction of Pastor "Fish" Robinson, Allen's mentor, and where Allen has traveled with the youth on numerous mission trips

including:  Durham, North Carolina, to construct a handicap ramp for an elderly lady; Savannah, Georgia, to reroof a house; Oxford, Mississippi, where the exterior of a house was refurbished;

Myrtle Beach, North Carolina, for an inspirational retreat that was a life-changing experience for Allen; and Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi, for Super Summer, a Christian Leadership Retreat; and

     WHEREAS, at North Oxford Baptist Church, Allen has played youth basketball since seventh grade, has been scorekeeper and referee for the Upward Basketball Program, and is currently coaching Upward Basketball fifth-grade boys for his senior year Capstone Service Project, required for graduation from Oxford High School; and

     WHEREAS, in high school, Allen has been a member of the journalism staff for The Oxford Charger, a national award-winning high school newspaper, where he won second place in a state competition and has designed and co-writes a monthly political opinion column named "Ben and Allen" where he writes the "conservative" viewpoint; and

     WHEREAS, Allen has competed on the Oxford High School Debate Team, serves as a representative for the Student Council, and has served as co-president for two years for Fellowship of Christian Athletes where he has given many key-note speeches, organized

high-profile speakers, and signed a pledge each year to remain alcohol and drug free throughout his high school years which he has accomplished; and

     WHEREAS, Allen served as a page for the Honorable Noal Akins in the House of Representatives during the 2005 Regular Session, has been accepted into the Trent Lott Institute at the University of Mississippi to study public policy, hopes to attend law school at the University of Virginia and pursue a career in politics or federal law enforcement; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the young people of our state, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Allen Nicholson Kurr of Boy Scouts of America Troop 146 on the honor of receiving the Eagle Scout Award and express heartiest wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Allen Kurr and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
