A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING COMMAND SERGEANT ADELCHI PILUTTI (RET) FOR BEING AWARDED THE PRESTIGIOUS FRENCH LEGION OF HONOR AND RECOGNIZING HIM FOR HIS SERVICE AND BRAVERY.

     WHEREAS, Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Adelchi Pilutti (Ret), who was born in Rivignano, Italy, on December 18, 1921, and currently resides in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, was awarded the prestigious French Legion of Honor on December 9, 2014, along with four other Mississippi residents who fought on French soil in France's defense during World War II; and

     WHEREAS, CSM Pilutti served in the United States Army Airborne from January 1941 until November 1945, during which he was promoted to the rank of sergeant, and was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment Company of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment (508th PIR or Red Devils) of the 82nd Airborne; and

     WHEREAS, the unit participated in Operation Overlord jumping into Normandy at 2:15 a.m. on 6 June 1944, and on July 13, they were transported back to England as part of the only 995 who returned from the 2056 troops who participated in the D-Day landings, with his regiment having suffered 1061 casualties, of which 307 were killed in action; and

     WHEREAS, after their success in Normandy, the regiment prepared for its role in Operation Market Garden in Holland on 17 September 1944, and the regiment later played a part in the Battle of the Bulge; and

     WHEREAS, after World War II, CSM Adelchi Pilutti continued to serve in the Mississippi National Guard from 1958 until his retirement in 1981, and he also worked at Keesler Air Force Base in several positions, retiring in 1983; and

     WHEREAS, along with the French Legion of Honor award, CSM Pilutti earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, as well as other medals of high honor and utmost bravery; and

     WHEREAS, CSM Pilutti's unflinching courage and gallant self-sacrifice reflect lasting glory upon himself and uphold the noble traditions of military service, for which the citizens of the State of Mississippi are most grateful; and

     WHEREAS, he has always been supported by his wife, Alice and their children, Aleta, Cathy and Blake; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to honor heroic Mississippians, such as CSM Adelchi Pilutti, for their courageous military service:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend CSM Adelchi Pilutti for being awarded the French Legion of Honor and recognizing him for his service and bravery in World War II.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to CSM Adelchi Pilutti and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
