A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE COLUMBUS HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR COMPLETING AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND CAPTURING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, on March 12, 2016, the Columbus High School Boys Basketball Team completed an impressive 27-5 win season, punctuated with the pinnacle of high school athletics, earning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A State Championship Trophy, a first for the school's history book and a moment that will forever connect the 2015-2016 Falcons Team members to the iconic moment of their storied high school careers; and

     WHEREAS, the 2015-2016 Falcons championship campaign began in November, with Head Coach Luther Riley's first season leading the Falcons and they managed to outlast the Starkville Yellowjackets, 37-33, in a championship game dominated by two excellent defenses; and

     WHEREAS, hosted in the Mississippi Coliseum, the championship game offered the Falcons one final stage to prove their mettle, in a hard fought game featuring several lead changes; the Falcons vanquished all impediments to the immortality that they would finally attain when the clock reached zero and they lifted the championship trophy high above their heads in euphoric bliss; and

     WHEREAS, the Falcons championship roster includes:  Kentravious McMurry, Jarvis Jackson, Javonta McDavid, Willie "T.J." Gray, Dontae Harris, Devin Tate, Tyler Spencer, Robert Woodard II, Jaquan Hines, Cameron Douglas, Jartavious Dobbs, Tyran Smith, Chris Blair, Chris Deloach, Denijay Harris, Artaveous McDyess and Demetrius Clopton; and

     WHEREAS, the Falcons Head Coach Luther Riley is assisted by:  Assistant Coaches, Gary Griffin, Phillip Morris, Tyler Adams and Don Deloach; team manager, Jaylen Vance; statisticians, Kameryn Lang, Maya Bogan, Deniz Akizi, Tierra Ledbetter and Kayla Jordan; and bookkeepers, Mary Owings and Cameron Oliver; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and honor the achievements of student athletes such as the Columbus High School Boys Basketball Team, who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Columbus High School Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Luther Riley for completing an outstanding 27-5 win season and capturing the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A State Championship, and extend best wishes to the team and coaches for continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Head Coach Luther Riley, Columbus High School Athletic Director Sammy Smith and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
