House Resolution 101

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION ACKNOWLEDGING AND COMMENDING THE PHYSICIANS, NURSES, STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE BANCROFT PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT AT BLAIR E. BATSON CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI MEDICAL CENTER FOR THEIR EXCEPTIONAL PROFESSIONAL AND ACUTE QUALITY OF MEDICAL SERVICE AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT PROVIDED TO PATIENTS AND PATIENTS' FAMILIES.

WHEREAS, the Bancroft Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, is Mississippi's only PICU in the state dedicated to the most critically ill, injured and traumatized children, which cared for nearly 1,500 children in 2012; and

WHEREAS, the facility is staffed by approximately 130 highly trained and specialized team members including:  pediatric intensivists, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, respiratory therapists and social workers; and

WHEREAS, the unit provides life-saving technology, in addition to providing spiritual and moral hope and support for families across the state whose children are critically ill or injured, regardless of financial means; and

WHEREAS, the doctors, nurses, technicians and other staff, dutifully tend to the needs of the families as well as the patients, the nurses selflessly taking the extra time to paint fingernails and toenails and brush the hair of the children whose medical care is placed in their hands; and

WHEREAS, the sacrificial efforts and genuine concern of nurses and staff is reflected in the bonds of friendship forged with patients and families, which sometimes translates to those professionals spending their own money on gifts, gowns and other items, and even so much as returning to the hospital to check on their patients and families on their off days; and

WHEREAS, as fate would lend itself to the predetermined paths of our lives by our Creator, the Bancroft Pediatric Intensive Care Unit fulfilled its divine purpose as its medical personnel loved and treated Ella Marie Formby for injuries sustained in a tragic automobile accident, demonstrating great love for her and her family in a most disconcerting time in the families' lives; and

WHEREAS, Ella's parents, Lourie and Julie Formby, also being severely injured, were offered tremendous love and support, and afforded great liberty in visiting Ella before her earthly life's transition to life ever after; and

WHEREAS, in an unyielding effort to express the measure of their immense gratitude to those individuals attending to Ella, whose service and dedication to providing astute care and service, allowed her last days on earth to be peaceful and comfortable, the Formby family extends a most sincere and heartfelt "Thank you!" to those who were positioned by God's hand to grace Ella's life and offer a kind and encouraging word as they endured one of life's most difficult struggles; and

WHEREAS, a precious child, whose life was but a glimpse of the hope that was to be her future, Ella's tenure on earth was brief, but "Ella's light" warmed the hearts of her loved ones; and

WHEREAS, Jesus spoke and said in Matthew 19:14, "Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven," the master plan of God and the Holy Trinity ordained it so that the Bancroft Pediatric Intensive Care Unit would be established to provide the necessary service and care to the "least of these" God's children; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the excellence and professionalism of such a remarkable organization and the personnel employed therein who provide such incomparable service as the Bancroft Pediatric Intensive Care Unit:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby acknowledge and commend the physicians, nurses, staff and administration of the Bancroft Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital of the University of Mississippi Medical Center for their exceptional professional and acute quality of medical service and emotional support provided to patients and patients' families, extend our most grateful appreciation on behalf of our colleague, Honorable "Uncle" Mark Formby, and the entire Formby family, for altruistically going above and beyond the call of duty to render the most attentive and specialized medical care to their loved one, a little princess, Ella Marie Formby, and convey our best wishes for continued success in the continued care afforded to Mississippi's most medically needy children.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to the Bancroft Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Lourie and Julie Formby and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
