House Resolution 11

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE OAK GROVE HIGH SCHOOL "WARRIORS" FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH NEVIL BARR FOR WINNING THEIR FIRST-EVER MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CLASS 6A CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Oak Grove High School "Warriors" Football Team are the Mississippi Class 6A State Champs, after defeating one of their rival high schools, Tupelo, in a 14-7 match in 35 degree weather on December 6, 2013, and marking the first time ever in the history of Oak Grove High School that they took home the State Championship in football; and

WHEREAS, the Warriors won the game with a fake field goal play, on which quarterback McCarty, also the holder, threw to a receiver who was lined up unguarded on the outside of the formation for an easy touchdown; and

WHEREAS, it is the first championship in school history for Oak Grove (14-1) and Coach Nevil Barr (133-38 in 13th season at Oak Grove, 255-114 in 31st season overall), who last guided the Warriors to a title game in 2009, and Coach Barr has made football relevant in his 13 years at Oak Grove, and this win was the ultimate coronation; and

WHEREAS, for 32 years, through good times and bad, for a host of head coaches, Steve Young worked as an assistant football coach at Oak Grove High School, and before the 2013 season began, knowing he was planning to retire, Young told the players that he wanted something special as a going-away present, and Coach Young was rewarded with the Warriors' Class 6A State Championship, as Oak Grove joined fellow Pine Belt Champions Forrest County Agricultural High School and Bassfield on the field at M.M. Roberts Stadium for the Parade of Champions, and a crowd of 600 fans from all three schools lined the streets of the University of Southern Mississippi campus for a parade along the traditional Eagle Walk route honoring the three championship teams, bands and cheerleaders from all three schools joined the players and coaches for a pep rally inside The Rock, where they were individually introduced, and the Pine Belt has never been represented so well as to have so many champions from such a relatively small radius of each other; and

WHEREAS, the Oak Grove Warriors High School Football Team Roster is as follows:  Trey Sloan, DB; Jordan Duncan, WR; Roderick Sims, LB; Jason Milsap, DB; Donald Winding, RB; Cameron Myers, QB; Picasso Nelson, Jr., WR; Josh Abram, WR; Mikal Bilal, DB; Chris Booth, DB; Jordan Mitchell, WR; J.C.
