A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MR. STEVEN R. WHITE OF THE BRANCH COMMUNITY OF MORTON, MISSISSIPPI, AND EDUCATOR AT ROSA SCOTT SCHOOL IN MADISON, MISSISSIPPI, UPON BEING NAMED ONE OF TWO MISSISSIPPI RECIPIENTS OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR GEOGRAPHIC EDUCATION K-12 DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN GEOGRAPHY TEACHING.

     WHEREAS, Mr. Steven R. White, a geography instructor at Rosa Scott High School in Madison, Mississippi, and native of Scott County, Mississippi, was one of two Mississippi educators named a recipient of the National Council For Geographic Education (NCGE) K-12 Distinguished Teaching Award for excellence in geography teaching during the National Conference For Geographic Education in Denver, Colorado, on August 3, 2013; and

     WHEREAS, a National Geographic-certified teacher/consultant with the Mississippi Geographic Alliance, Mr. White has held numerous education leadership positions in the state, including officer positions in the Mississippi Council for the Social Studies and the Mississippi Geographic Alliance; and

     WHEREAS, named Rosa Scott School's High School Teacher of the Year for 2012-2013 and the Mississippi Council for the Social Studies Teacher of the Year for 2003-2004, Mr. White serves as a contributing author for Madison County's mentoring program with six other teachers and community leaders, in addition to having served on staff for the Pre-Service Geography Conference; and

     WHEREAS, humbled to share his teaching abilities with his students, Mr. White's tenacity and zealous commitment to education have afforded him the privilege of winning Nissan Grant Awards in 2009 and 2012, which benefited his students through the purchase of technology equipment such as Apple iPads to be used for research and various other projects, and in 2010 he was honored with the opportunity to travel to Japan for a study with the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA); and

     WHEREAS, designed to recognize educators and advocates of Mr. Whites' caliber who have made outstanding contributions to geography education, the NCGE awards are given for teaching, research and service; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize excellence in education as demonstrated by the ardent professionalism, dedication and heightened success of such exceptionally talented and experienced educators as Mr. White, whose commitment to education has bestowed great honor upon himself, his hometown, Rosa Scott High School and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mr. Steven R. White upon being named one of two Mississippi recipients of the National Council for Geographic Education K-12 Distinguished Teaching Award for excellence in geography teaching, and extend most sincere wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. White, the principal of Rosa Scott High School and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
