Senate Concurrent Resolution 556

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE MOUNT OLIVE HIGH SCHOOL "PIRATES" FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH PERRY MURPHY FOR WINNING THEIR SECOND MHSAA CLASS 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, quarterback Ruben Duckworth's 7-yard touchdown burst and PAT kick lifted the Mount Olive High School "Pirates" Football Team to a thrilling 27-26 overtime victory over Durant for the Mississippi High School Athletic Association 1A State Championship before an estimated crowd of 1,800 fans at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on December 3, 2009; and

WHEREAS, unranked Mount Olive (10-5) claimed its first State Title since 1989, when the Steve McNair-led Pirates beat Smithville High School for the Class 1A crown; and

WHEREAS, Mount Olive overcame an 0-4 start and won 10 of their last 11 games to get to Jackson.  The Pirates had a demanding nonregion schedule; and

WHEREAS, quarterback Ruben Duckworth ran 23 times for 134 yards and two touchdowns.  He also got the Pirates, down 14-0, back into the game with an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.  What's more, he played game-long at safety and made several crucial tackles.  Duckworth, a 200-pound junior, nearly duplicated the late Steve McNair's performance; and

WHEREAS, "Ruben Duckworth has excelled in every game this year," said first-year Mount Olive Coach Perry Murphy, who led his Alma Mater (Class of 1976) to its second State Title.  "He's not the only person we've got, but he's our workhorse.  He started willing us to win and he didn't want to get beat."  After Duckworth's two first-half TDs, Mount Olive tied it at 20-20 on fullback Timothy Feazell's one-yard scoring burst and Duckworth's PAT with 6:14 to play in the third quarter; and

WHEREAS, Mount Olive's 2009 Roster is as follows:  Danzel Keller, Isameal Tribbit, Cooley Davis, Joseph Owens, Girek Wheeler, Octavius Feazell, Rayshad Duckworth, Kyrus Hall, Jimmy Runnels, William Autmon, Rueben Duckworth, Larue Hayes, Desmon Langston, Joshua Nicks, Nirobian Gray, Jamison Feazell, Jacob Runnels, Timothy Feazell, Devonte Williams, Donnell Cooper, Darion Griffith, Kendrick Duckworth, Antawn Easterling, Tozmaun Gray, Jonathan Graves, Jabree Dampier, Jonthan Hinton, Dannie Polk, Joshua Carr, Charvezy Lockett, Robert McInnis, John Baggett, Thomas Gray and Kenneth Feazell; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the achievement of this group of student athletes who with this thrilling victory have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Mount Olive High School "Pirates" Football Team and first-year Head Coach Perry Murphy for winning their second MHSAA Class 1A State Championship, and extend to the team, parents, coaches, sponsors and staff our best wishes for success in their future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Murphy and Principal Clay Anglin, forwarded to the Covington County Board of Education and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
