Senate Concurrent Resolution 587

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE OPPOSITION OF THE MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE TO A PLAN BEING CONSIDERED BY THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS AUTHORIZING FEDERAL ACQUISITION OF PRIVATELY HELD LAND IN YAZOO COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, NEAR THE PANTHER SWAMP NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE.

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Legislature has been advised that a proposal is being considered by the United States Congress wherein the United States government would acquire up to 48,000 acres of privately owned land near the Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Yazoo County, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Legislature finds that such proposal is not in the best interests of the citizens of the City of Yazoo City or of the State of Mississippi because it would devastate businesses within the City of Yazoo City, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Legislature joins the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Yazoo City and the Supervisors of Yazoo County, Mississippi, in unanimously opposing such a proposal and urges the Mississippi Congressional Delegation to oppose such a measure:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we hereby oppose the proposed plan being considered by the United States Congress wherein the United States government would acquire privately held land located near the Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Yazoo County, Mississippi, and hereby urge the Mississippi Congressional Delegation to oppose any such plan.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a certified copy of this resolution shall be transmitted to the Mississippi Congressional Delegation, forwarded to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Yazoo City, Mississippi, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
