A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE CIVIC AND CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS AND DEDICATED PUBLIC SERVICE OF JESSE THOMPSON, JR., OF JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, in honor of Black History Month, we join the Jackson State University Alumni and the congregation of Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church in recognizing the outstanding career of Jesse Thompson, Jr., of Jackson, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, born and raised in McComb, Mississippi, Jesse graduated from Higgins High School in McComb, Class of 1969.  He graduated from Jackson State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Science Education.  Jesse began his career with the Pollution Control Commission in 1976 as an Environmental Aid in the Air Division.  While in the Air Division, he worked with Minor Source Permitting, Compliance and Emission Management System, and was also the Stack Testing Expert for air sampling; and

     WHEREAS, in 1995, Jesse became the state's first small business Ombudsman and served in this capacity for the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.  He was also responsible for managing the Mississippi Small Business Technical Program and served as the Environmental Assistance Division Director and the Diversity Coordinator.  Jesse was the Interim Director of the Environmental Resource Center providing customer service activities to citizens and communities until his retirement from state government on July 1, 2013.  Jesse is currently the CEO of JThompson and Associates, Inc., a multifaceted consulting firm providing Entertainment Consulting, Security and Public Sector Relations; and

     WHEREAS, Jesse Thompson, Jr., is the founder and President of Jackson Music Awards, Inc.  This organization produces the annual City With Soul Awards, Mississippi Gospel Music Awards, and the Jackson Music Awards.  He serves on the Board of Directors of the Farish Street Heritage Festival and served on the Jackson Arts and Music Foundation which presented the Jubilee Jam Festival in Jackson.  He is currently on the Advisory Board of the Jackson Rhythm and Blues Festival and Special Consultant to the Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau; and

     WHEREAS, Jesse is one of the founding members and serves as Vice Chairman of the Jackson State University Tiger Fund Athletic Foundation which is the official fund-raising arm for Jackson State University Athletics and other specialized areas of need; and

     WHEREAS, Jesse is a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., a Licensed Real Estate Broker, Special Events Producer, Music Publisher, and a Certified Law Enforcement Officer; and

     WHEREAS, he is a member of the Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church where he is an Ordained Deacon, Chairman of the Trustee Board, member of the Male Chorus, Sunday School Teacher, the Director of the church's Television Ministry and Head Men's Church Basketball Coach; and

     WHEREAS, Jesse is married to Judy G. Thompson of Jackson.  They have a son, Jason (Elizabeth); daughter, Janell (Chris); and grandchildren:  Nicolas Brock, Neki Brock, Jaylyn Brock, Madison Thompson, Isabelle Vinson, Zoey Vinson and Kyndall J. Thompson; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we commend the career of this respected civic leader and businessman who has brought honor to his university and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the civic and charitable contributions and dedicated public service of Jesse Thompson, Jr., of Jackson, Mississippi.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Jesse Thompson, Jr., the President of Jackson State University, forwarded to Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
