Senate Concurrent Resolution 670

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND ENCOURAGING THE FEDERAL CENTERS FOR MEDICARE AND MEDICAID SERVICES TO RECOGNIZE PHARMACISTS AS HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS AND AS AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT OF HEALTH CARE DELIVERY AND PATIENT CARE IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI AND CONTRIBUTORS TO ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS.

WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi recognizes that pharmacists are an integral component of health care delivery and a valuable component of patient care; and

WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi recognizes that pharmacists provide valuable health care services to patients; and

WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi recognizes that pharmacists make pharmaceutical usage more rational, safe and affordable for patients and the overall health care system; and

WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi recognizes that in addition to the dispensing of medication, pharmacists provide preventative and wellness services (blood pressure/cholesterol screening, tobacco cessation, medication therapy management and immunizations) and play a critical role in promoting patient adherence to their medication regimens, thereby preventing more costly downstream medical interventions:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize that pharmacists are health care providers and an integral component of the health care delivery and patient care delivery system in the State of Mississippi.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the State of Mississippi encourages the federal government and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMMS) to recognize pharmacists as eligible health care providers of medication-related patient care services as well as recognize them as "meaningful users" and contributors to electronic health records.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be transmitted to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Division of Medicaid and the State Board of Health, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
