A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE CLAY COUNTY ALUMNAE CHAPTER OF DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC., FOR 30 YEARS OF CHARITABLE AND PUBLIC SERVICE.

     WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is the largest African-American Greek-lettered Sorority in the world and is a private, nonprofit organization comprised of more than 250,000 predominantly Black college-educated women whose primary purpose is to provide support through program initiatives and public service in local communities through the world; and

     WHEREAS, founded in 1913, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., the sorority has more than 950 Alumnae/Collegiate chapters located in the United States, England, Japan, Germany, Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea.  For 103 years, the sorority and its members have remained dedicated to the overall mission of promoting academic excellence, providing scholarships, supporting the underserved, educating and stimulating participation in the establishment of positive public policy and providing solutions to problems in their communities; and

     WHEREAS, the Clay County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is faithfully committed to the development of programs based upon the organization's Five Points Programmatic Thrust:  Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health and Political Awareness and Involvement as established by its founders over 103 years ago; and

     WHEREAS, the Clay County Alumnae Chapter was chartered on April 26, 1986, with 12 members and has since grown to 46 women who have made great progress over 30 years.  Highlighting some of their community service include health and wellness seminars, educational/political forums, voter's registration drives, landscaping Habitat for Humanity homes, Book Donations, Artist in Residence, Relay for Life, Delta Days at the Capitol, Mary Help of the Sick Mission Hospital, Community-Wide Easter Egg Hunt, Partners in Education, Black Heritage Essay Oratorical Contest, Careers on Wheel, Walk for a Cure, are just to name a few; and

     WHEREAS, the Clay County Alumnae Chapter's mission and programs benefit the Community of West Point, Clay County and the State of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, public service and social change have been synonymous with this organization since it was founded in 1913, and sparked a movement that has shown growth of more than 200,000 members nationwide, and has given countless volunteer hours to educate and improve communities throughout this great state and the world:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Clay County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., for 30 years of charitable and public service and for their commitment to educate and improve communities throughout the State of Mississippi.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be furnished to the Clay County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
