A RESOLUTION TO COMMEND SENATE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE GILES K. WARD FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE IN THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE.

WHEREAS, Senate President Pro Tempore Giles K. Ward has announced that he will not be seeking reelection, which he characterizes as a "self-imposed term limit."  He has represented Senate District 18, which includes portions of Leake, Neshoba and Winston Counties, for eight years.  In Giles Ward, the citizens of District 18 have had effective representation from a dedicated public servant with business experience; and

WHEREAS, Senator Ward was elected to the Senate in 2008 and was recognized by his fellow-Senators by his nomination and election to fill the unexpired term of President Pro Tempore Terry Brown for the 2015 Regular Session and for the remainder of the term, following the untimely loss of Senator Brown; and

WHEREAS, Giles is a retired Regional Manager for Georgia-Pacific Corporation who lives in Louisville, Mississippi.  He is active in both the Louisville-Winston County and Leake County Chambers of Commerce, and is a longtime member of the Mississippi Manufacturers Association; and

WHEREAS, prior to his election as President Pro Tempore, his committee assignments included the following:  Chairman of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks; Vice Chairman of Energy; Vice Chairman of Forestry, Agriculture, Business and Financial Institutions, Environmental Protection, Finance, Highways and Transportation and Judiciary B; and

WHEREAS, Senator Ward's key legislative interests have included requirements for training for crematory operators and more stringent rules for crematories, numerous economic development projects and his leadership in the rebuilding of the Winston Medical Center and medical facilities following the devastating tornado damage of 2014, and as an avid outdoorsman active in hunting and fishing regulation; and

WHEREAS, he and his wife, Kay, are Methodists and have two children, Laura and Jeremy; and three grandchildren, Haley, Sally Ann and Cliff; and

WHEREAS, President Pro Tempore Ward's service has been marked by his commitment to success and recognized leadership, sound judgment, civility, courtesy and fairness.  He has set the highest standard in all of his many roles:  husband, father, businessman, statesman, community leader and leader in the Mississippi Senate, and as a true friend.  Giles' service honored both the Mississippi Senate and this great State that he loved and served:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and recognize President Pro Tempore Giles K. Ward, whose outstanding service enriched everyone with whom he was associated, and we wish Giles and his family much success in his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to President Pro Tempore Ward and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
