Senate Resolution 3

A RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING KRISTY D'ANNA JOHNSON UPON BEING NAMED MISS BLACK MISSISSIPPI USA 2017, AND EXTENDING BEST WISHES FOR SUCCESS IN THE NATIONAL PAGEANT.

     WHEREAS, Kristy D'Anna Johnson has been named Miss Black Mississippi USA 2017; and

     WHEREAS, Mississippi winner Kristy Johnson, an alumna of Jackson State University, proves beauty queens are more than a pretty face as she prepares to represent the state in the Miss Black USA National Scholarship Pageant; and

     WHEREAS, Kristy is a 2013 graduate of Jackson State University with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology, and is currently a second-year graduate student at Mississippi College where she is studying to become a licensed mental health counselor, and after graduation she will attend the University of Alabama's Psychology Doctoral Program, with a concentration in law, to become a behavioral analyst; and

     WHEREAS, an active member of her community and the state at large, Kristy takes part in many civic organizations, including Big Brothers and Sisters of America, Youth Advisory Council for the Mississippi Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Girls with a Dream, Kountry Kidz Incorporated, and is a 2016 inductee into the Chi Sigma Iota Counseling Honors Society; and

     WHEREAS, her platform, "Be Empowered," focuses on reprogramming youth into believing in themselves, their communities and surroundings.  During her reign, she will host summits, service projects and other community activities throughout Mississippi.  "Because service is near and dear to my heart, this great state needs to see more activism within our younger populations.  Each of us has a skill that we can use for the greater good of our communities," Johnson said.  She will represent Mississippi in the National Pageant August 2017, in Washington, D.C.  She will vie for a $5,000.00 academic scholarship, a trip to Africa, wardrobe by Liliana Shoes and ORS Olive Oil Hair products.  As well, the winner will serve as a celebrity advocate for the Heart Truth Campaign, which raises awareness about heart disease, the leading cause of death of women in the United States; and

     WHEREAS, Miss Black USA is the nation's premier pageant for women of color.  To date, the nonprofit organization, headquartered in Maryland, has awarded more than $450,000.00 in scholarships to its participants:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby congratulate Kristy D'Anna Johnson on being named Miss Black Mississippi USA 2017, and extend best wishes for success in the National Miss Black USA Pageant.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Miss Kristy Johnson, forwarded to the President of Jackson State University Rod Paige, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
