Directs DOE to develop health and safety best practices for use of digital devices in school classrooms.

An Act concerning the use of digital devices in classrooms and supplementing chapter 36 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. a. The Department of Education, in consultation with the Department of Health, shall develop within one year of the effective date of this act, health and safety best practices for the use of digital devices in school classrooms. The Department of Education shall provide the best practices to each school district and nonpublic school in the State for consideration and adoption. The Department of Education and the Department of Health periodically shall review the best practices and revise or update them as necessary or appropriate.
b. As used in this section, "digital devices" include computers, smart phones, electronic tablets, and other electronic devices that may be utilized in a classroom.
2. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This bill requires the Department of Education, in consultation with the Department of Health, to develop health and safety best practices for the use of digital devices in school classrooms. Under the bill, the Department of Education will provide the best practices to every school district and nonpublic school in the State for consideration and adoption. The best practices are required to be developed within one year of the bill's effective date. The bill also directs the Department of Education and the Department of Health to periodically review the best practices and revise or update them as necessary or appropriate.
