SYNOPSIS

     Requires Pinelands Commission to designate North American fox grape as native Pinelands plant within special agricultural production areas.

An Act concerning special agricultural production areas within the pinelands area and supplementing P.L.1979, c.111 (C.13:18A-1 et seq.).

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    Notwithstanding the provisions of the comprehensive management plan or any rule or regulation to the contrary, the commission shall designate the North American fox grape, Vitis labrusca, to be a native Pinelands plant for the purposes of authorized agricultural or horticultural uses within any special agricultural production area.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill would require the Pinelands Commission to designate the North American fox grape, Vitis labrusca, to be a native Pinelands plant for the purposes of authorized agricultural or horticultural uses within any special agricultural production area.  Currently, the Pinelands comprehensive management plan, at N.J.A.C.7:50-5.25, provides that berry agriculture and horticulture of native plants and other agricultural activities compatible with existing soil and water conditions that support traditional Pinelands berry agriculture are permitted uses within special agricultural production areas.  This bill would require the Pinelands Commission to include cultivation of the North American fox grape, Vitis labrusca, as an authorized agricultural or horticultural use within these areas.
