SYNOPSIS

     Directs various State agencies to maintain a user-friendly 511NJ website.

An Act concerning the 511NJ website maintained by various State agencies and supplementing Title 27 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.  The Department of Transportation, in consultation with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, the South Jersey Transportation Authority, the State Police, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, the Delaware River Port Authority, and any other contributing agency, shall provide consolidated, real-time traffic and transportation information concerning interstates and highways in this State, the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, the Atlantic City Expressway, bridge and tunnel crossings, and any other relevant information concerning traffic conditions in this State, using various methods of broadcast, including, but not limited to, a telephone hotline and a website, which shall be known as 511NJ.

 

     2.  a.  The Commissioner of Transportation, in consultation with the Executive Director of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, the Executive Director of the South Jersey Transportation Authority, the Superintendant of the State Police, the Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Executive Director of the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Delaware River Port Authority, shall ensure that the 511NJ website maintains a user-friendly interface that is adaptable across various electronic telecommunication devices, including smart phones.

     b.  The commissioner, in consultation with the Executive Director of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, the Executive Director of the South Jersey Transportation Authority, the Superintendant of the State Police, the Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Executive Director of the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Delaware River Port Authority, shall develop and undertake a public awareness program to educate the public concerning the availability of the 511NJ website.  The program shall incorporate the use of both broadcast and print media.

     c.  As used in this section, "smart phone" means a cellular telephone that includes an operating system capable of supporting access to Internet websites.

 

     3. This act shall take effect on the 180th day after enactment; however, the Department of Transportation may take such administrative action in advance as shall be necessary for the implementation of this act.


STATEMENT

 

     This bill requires the Department of Transportation, in consultation with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, the South Jersey Transportation Authority, the State Police, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, the Delaware River Port Authority, and any other contributing agency, to provide consolidated, real-time traffic and transportation information concerning interstates and highways in this State, the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, the Atlantic City Expressway, bridge and tunnel crossings, and any other relevant information concerning traffic conditions in this State, using various methods of broadcast, including, but not limited to, a telephone hotline and a website, which will be known as 511NJ.
