SYNOPSIS

     "New Jersey Tuition Equality for America's Military (NJTEAM) Act;" provides in-State tuition at New Jersey public institutions of higher education to military veterans.

An Act concerning veterans and higher education and amending P.L.1985, c.231.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    Section 1 of P.L.1985, c.231 (C.18A:62-4.1) is amended to read as follows:

     1.    a.  United States military personnel and their dependents who are living in New Jersey and are attending public institutions of higher education in New Jersey shall be regarded as residents of the State for the purpose of determining tuition.

     b.    A veteran attending a public institution of higher education in New Jersey shall be regarded as a resident of the State for the purpose of determining tuition.

     As used in this subsection, "veteran" means a person who has served on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonarable.

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill will be known and referred to as the "New Jersey Tuition Equality for America's Military (NJTEAM) Act."  The bill provides that a veteran who is attending a public institution of higher education in New Jersey will be regarded as a resident of the State, thereby enabling the veteran to pay an in-State tuition rate.

     A "veteran" for the purposes of this bill is a person who has served on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonarable.
