SYNOPSIS

Urges federal government to take action to assist with Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant emergency in Japan.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution urging the federal government to take any and all available actions to assist with the emergency situation at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan.

Whereas, On March 11, 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck Japan and was followed by a tsunami estimated to have exceeded 45 feet, resulting in extensive damage to the nuclear power reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station; and

Whereas, Over two years after the devastation caused by the tsunami, the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station is continuing to experience significant problems that jeopardize public health and the environment; and

Whereas, Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority recently informed the International Atomic Energy Agency that it has rated a leak of radioactive water at the Tokyo Electric Power Company's (TEPCO) Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station at level 3 -- a "serious incident" -- on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale; and

Whereas, News reports indicate that this leak of contaminated water may have began nearly a month and a half before it was reported on August 19, 2013; and

Whereas, This leakage of contaminated water follows recent incidents when debris removal work in the upper part of the Unit 3 Reactor Building caused radioactive material densities in the air to increase; and

Whereas, The release of highly contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean and groundwater and the release of radioactive material into the air, if not immediately stopped and contained, will further jeopardize the public health, safety, and environment, not only of the workers at the facility, and the residents of Japan and nearby countries, but also worldwide, including the United States; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House urges the United States Government to immediately take any and all available actions to assist with the emergency situation at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan in order to protect the public health, safety, and environment.

     2.    Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk of the General Assembly, shall be transmitted to the President of the United States, the Majority and Minority Leaders of the United States Senate, the Speaker and Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, every member of Congress elected from this State, and the Chairman of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

STATEMENT
