SYNOPSIS

Expresses support for the New Jersey State Building & Construction Trades Council's Helmets to Hardhats program.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution expressing support for the New Jersey State Building & Construction Trades Council's Helmets to Hardhats program.

Whereas, The Helmets to Hardhats Program is a national program established in 2003 that connects National Guard, Reserve, and transitioning active-duty military members with quality career training and employment opportunities in the construction industry; and

Whereas, The New Jersey Helmets to Hardhats program (NJ H2H), administered by the New Jersey State Building & Construction Trades Council, is designed to help transitioning military personnel, National Guardsmen, and Reservists find solid, family-sustaining careers in the building and construction industry as boilermakers, bricklayers, tile setters, electrical workers, elevator constructors, insulators, asbestos workers, craft laborers, operating engineers, painters, pipe trades workers, roofers, sheet metal workers, iron workers, plasterers, and cement masons; and

Whereas, In 2011, NJ H2H received $195,000 to partner with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development to: (1) increase the number of participants enrolled in the program; (2) increase the number of participants receiving services through the program; (3) increase the number of participants who took the work keys test; (4) offer additional outreach sessions; and (5) increase the number of participants placed in approved apprenticeships; and

Whereas, NJ H2H exceeded all of its target outcomes and was able to enroll and provide services to 374 participants, offer the work keys test to 320 participants, offer 19 outreach sessions, and place 45 participants in approved apprenticeships; and

Whereas, NJ H2H is planning to host a career fair on June 23rd in cooperation with Fort Dix to offer additional career services to those transitioning from military service; and

Whereas, The men and women from New Jersey serving our country have answered the call to protect America from harm and to preserve peace and democracy in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere around the world; and

Whereas, The NJ H2H program provides a valuable service to these brave men and women by helping to connect them to secure, well-paid jobs in the building and construction industry; and

Whereas, It is altogether fitting and proper to recognize the NJ H2H program and the New Jersey State Building & Construction Trades Council for their efforts to aid military personnel from this State and to encourage their future efforts to aid those who have so bravely served us; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.  This House recognizes the work done by the New Jersey State Building & Construction Trades Council's Helmets to Hardhats program to help transitioning military personnel, National Guardsmen, and Reservists find solid, family-sustaining careers in the building and construction industry and encourages the continued efforts of the council and the program.

     2.  Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested to by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to William T. Mullen, President of the New Jersey State Building & Construction Trades Council, Brigadier General Michael L. Cunniff, Adjutant General of the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs, and Harold J. Wirths, Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
