Bill Title: Provides that no class or any other course of instruction shall be held in any institution within the state university on those days of religious observance known as Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur provided, however, that the chancellor, in his discretion, may exempt any institution from such observance.

       AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to observance of  certain
         holidays  by  institutions  within  the  state university and the city
         university of New York
         THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
       BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
    1    Section  1.   The education law is amended by adding a new section 361
    2  to read as follows:
    3    S 361.  HOLIDAYS TO BE OBSERVED.   NO CLASS OR  ANY  OTHER  COURSE  OF
    4  INSTRUCTION SHALL BE HELD IN ANY INSTITUTION WITHIN THE STATE UNIVERSITY
    5  ON  THOSE  DAYS  OF  RELIGIOUS  OBSERVANCE KNOWN AS ROSH HASHANAH OR YOM
    6  KIPPUR PROVIDED, HOWEVER, THAT THE CHANCELLOR, IN HIS OR HER DISCRETION,
    7  MAY EXEMPT  ANY  INSTITUTION  FROM  THE  FOREGOING  PROVISIONS  OF  THIS
    8  SECTION.
    9    S 2. The education law is amended by adding a new section 6235 to read
   10  as follows:
   11    S  6235.  HOLIDAYS  TO  BE  OBSERVED.  NO CLASS OR ANY OTHER COURSE OF
   12  INSTRUCTION SHALL BE HELD IN ANY INSTITUTION WITHIN THE CITY  UNIVERSITY
   13  ON  THOSE  DAYS  OF  RELIGIOUS  OBSERVANCE KNOWN AS ROSH HASHANAH OR YOM
   14  KIPPUR PROVIDED, HOWEVER, THAT THE CHANCELLOR, IN HIS OR HER DISCRETION,
   15  MAY EXEMPT  ANY  INSTITUTION  FROM  THE  FOREGOING  PROVISIONS  OF  THIS
   16  SECTION.
   17    S 3.  This act shall take effect immediately.
