       AN ACT to amend the education  law,  in  relation  to  phasing  out  the
         specialist assistant registration
         THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
       BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
    1    Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new  section  6549
    2  to read as follows:
    3     S  6549.  SPECIALIST ASSISTANT REGISTRATION; REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT
    4  PHASE-OUT. 1. NO NEW REGISTRATION  FOR  SPECIALIST  ASSISTANT  SHALL  BE
    5  GRANTED ONE YEAR AFTER THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF THIS SECTION.
    6    2.  ANY  PERSON  WHO  IS REGISTERED UNDER THIS ARTICLE AS A SPECIALIST
    7  ASSISTANT AND MEETS ALL THE REQUIREMENTS OF LAW AND  REGULATION  ON  THE
    8  DAY  BEFORE  ONE  YEAR AFTER THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF THIS SECTION SHALL BE
    9  PERMITTED TO CONTINUE TO PRACTICE IN THAT CAPACITY UNDER APPLICABLE  LAW
   10  AND  REGULATION AND ANY OTHER PROVISIONS DEEMED NECESSARY BY THE COMMIS-
   11  SIONER.
   12    S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
