Senate Resolution No. 1328

        COMMENDING Michael S. DeGregorio upon the occasion
        of  his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal,
        the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
        New York State Senate

  WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize  and  acknowledge  those  within  our  midst  who  have   made
significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and

  WHEREAS,  It  is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
caring concern and heroic acts of exemplary citizens who take prompt and
appropriate action in emergency situations, and in doing so, help others
to avert life-threatening danger; and

  WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Michael S.
DeGregorio upon the occasion  of  his  designation  as  recipient  of  a
Liberty  Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New
York State Senate; and

  WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established  by
Resolution  and  is  awarded  to  individuals  who  have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf  of
their fellow New Yorkers; and

  WHEREAS,  On  Tuesday,  March 28, 2023, at approximately 12:30 p.m.,
Lindernhurst Middle School security officer Michael  S.  DeGregorio  was
patrolling  the  school  when  a  13-year-old  boy  was  assaulted  by a
12-year-old classmate, sustaining a life-threatening knife wound to  his
groin; and

  WHEREAS,  Without  regard  for his own safety, Michael S. DeGregorio
immediately ran to the victim, and applying  the  lifesaving  skills  he
learned  as  a firefighter and former police officer he used his belt to
apply a tourniquet on the student's leg, stemming the profuse  bleeding;
and

  WHEREAS,  Shortly  thereafter,  local  police officers responded and
also applied a tourniquet, and the boy  was  airlifted  to  Stony  Brook
University Hospital where he recovered; and

  WHEREAS,  A  native  of Lindenhurst, Michael S. DeGregorio, known to
many as "Mikey D", joined the New  York  City  Police  Department  after
graduating  from  high school; after many years of dedicated service, he
became a security officer with the Lindenhurst Middle School; and

  WHEREAS, On August 1,  1989,  Michael  S.  DeGregorio  joined  Hook,
Ladder  and  Engine No. 2 of the Lindenhurst Fire Department; he quickly
rose through the ranks serving as Lieutenant,  Captain  and  Chief  from
April  2015  through April 2017, and again from April 2021 through April
2023; and

  WHEREAS, Michael S. DeGregorio is also a member of  the  Lindenhurst
Fire Police and Dive Team; and


  WHEREAS,  With  him  throughout  have been his wife Dorina and their
three  children,  Gabriella,  Joseph  and  Gianna,  all  of  whom   feel
privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and

  WHEREAS,  Praised  for  his  swift  actions,  Michael  S. DeGregorio
demonstrated his true character and genuine compassion for  the  welfare
of  others,  personifying,  by  virtue  of  his  actions, the collective
concern of ordinary citizens across the community of the  State  of  New
York who voluntarily respond when others are in need; and

  WHEREAS,  Justly  recognized as a hero, Michael S. DeGregorio richly
merits the admiration of this Legislative Body and his community for his
consummate courage and heroic actions; now, therefore, be it

  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its  deliberations  to
commend  Michael  S.  DeGregorio upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of a  Liberty  Medal,  the  highest  honor  bestowed  upon  an
individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further

  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Michael S. DeGregorio.
