        HONORING  Katie  Hoeg  upon  the  occasion  of her
        designation as recipient of the Patterson  Medal  by
        the University of North Carolina

  WHEREAS,  Individual  and team championships are highly sought after
in collegiate sports;  this  Legislative  Body  commends  rare  athletic
achievements  and  pays  special  recognition  to  those who pursue such
excellence and become examples for the youth of this great Empire State;
and

  WHEREAS, Athletic competition helps to enhance both  the  moral  and
physical development of young athletes, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the importance of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, and developing a sense of fair play and competition; and

  WHEREAS,  This  Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Katie Hoeg
upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the Patterson Medal
by the University of North Carolina; and

  WHEREAS, First presented at the University of North  Carolina  (UNC)
in  1924,  the  Patterson  Medal,  named after John Durand Patterson, is
awarded to an outstanding athlete who has played at least three  seasons
for  the  Tar  Heels, and has demonstrated superlative sportsmanship and
strong leadership; Katie Hoeg is truly  deserving  of  this  prestigious
award; and

  WHEREAS,  The  daughter  of  James  and  Karen  Hoeg, Katie has been
playing lacrosse since she was a child; as a senior  at  Mattituck  High
School  in  New  York,  she tallied 56 goals and 58 assists and recorded
more than 500 career points in her six varsity seasons as a Lady Tucker;
and

  WHEREAS,  After  graduating,  the  standout   attacker   began   her
collegiate  lacrosse  career  as a Tar Heel for UNC at Chapel Hill where
she continued to excel in both her studies and academics;  today,  as  a
Redshirt  Senior,  this scholar-athlete is UNC's all-time leading scorer
for the women's lacrosse team; and

  WHEREAS, Over the course of her career at UNC, Katie Hoeg  has  been
instrumental in the success of the women's lacrosse program, leading the
Tar  Heels  to  a  78-12  record,  four  Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)
Championships, and three trips to the  national  semifinals;  she  ranks
fourth  in  ACC  history  with  370 points, is the conference's all-time
assists leader, and is second in National College  Athletic  Association
(NCAA) history with 233 points; and

  WHEREAS,  As a senior, Katie Hoeg led the Nation with 71 assists and
3.38 assists per game and set UNC's single-season assist record with  73
in  2019;  she  was  named  the  2020  National  Player  of  the Year, a
first-team  All-American  in  2018,  2020  and   2021,   a   second-team
All-American in 2019, received All-ACC selection three times, and was an
NCAA All-Tournament honoree in both 2019 and 2021; and

  WHEREAS,  Sports  competition instills the values of teamwork, pride
and accomplishment, and Katie Hoeg has clearly made  a  contribution  to
the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of her school; and

  WHEREAS,  The  epitome  of  a  great athlete, Katie Hoeg proudly and
enthusiastically serves as a role model for all female athletes; she  is
self-confident,  motivated,  self-disciplined,  optimistic, poised under
stress,  focused,  resilient,  humble,  passionate  and  able  to   take
criticism,  all characteristics which have made her the strong woman she
is today, both on and off the field; now, therefore, be it

  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its  deliberations  to
honor  Katie  Hoeg  upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the Patterson Medal by the University of North Carolina, and to wish her
continued success throughout her remaining school years and beyond;  and
be it further

  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Katie Hoeg.
